When people wield a weapon intending to use it to forcibly get what they want, it sometimes make them overconfident. They start to think that no one would possibly act to stop them from their acts. Wielding such an object gives them power as they are quite dangerous, and they are especially so if they are used on an unsuspecting individual.
However, yielding a melee object effectively against an alert and aggressive individual takes skill. Having the object in your hand does not automatically makes you stronger or faster. In fact, you are limited in your skill and athletic ability to use it effectively. You are still vulnerable to being hit or grabbed.
