Psychology Behind Catfishing

SHARE

We have all heard of the show called catfish. This made it a popular term for the act of deceiving another person over the internet on what your true appearance is. Meeting up with up with the person and looking like a completely different person is what completes the act of catfishing. What is the point of this?

This all stems from insecurity over personal appearance, and using either old pictures or pictures of a completely different person in order to boost the catfisher’s ego or self esteem by the idea of being desired. What starts out as something minor becomes serious when the catfisher becomes attached to the victim, and continues to live out the fraudulent persona. Meeting the person in real life, they usually hope the victim will go along with it. This attempt usually ends in vain.
